Coffee & Chaos is a comedy tabletop roleplaying game about running a cafe, bar, restaurant or other establishment as everything goes very, very wrong around you.

-------The Game------

It has been built on a rules-lite framework that facilitates two major things:

1. Allows the game to be played with any characters and work especially well with pre-existing characters for one-off comedy sessions within longer campaigns.

2. Allows for the game to pull away from the idea of winning and instead focus on telling hilarious stories.

Characters are defined by their approaches to problems, which indicate how they would try to fix that broken keg, or negotiate with that difficult customer. These are represented by Knives, Forks and Spoons.

Knives - Direct Approaches

Forks - Creative Approaches

Spoons - Considered Approaches

This allows characters to retain all of their quirks from any other games they might be in. Your druid can still wildshape, your street samurai still has their cyber-arm. But when taken out of their element the focus is on how they use those skills and abilities to solve problems (or accidentally make things worse).

Coffee & Chaos is presented on a Menu and a Tabletalker

what happens if the Heart is the snafu? is it automatically a success? seems ok for a delivery order but not a fire.

(1 edit)

The card draws for outcomes are separate to the ones for the Situations. So the Heart for a Snaffu is only used in the reference table and a second card is flipped to decide the outcome.

My group are probably going to be playing this soon! One thing I don't understand, in the rock-paper-scissors system of wagering and drawing cards, what happens if the player's wager matches the card drawn? e.g. my character wagers a Knife and draws a Diamond? Do we just draw again?

Draws are a failure. They work the same as if they drew a Knife and then Drew a Spade.
Thanks for the question! We hope you have loads of fun with the game!

OK great, thanks for the reply! :D

I'm reading through this game, and it looks delightful. I look forward to playing it with my D&D group.

However, I don't see any instructions for ending the game, or for how long a shift should last. Just until each person in the party has gotten to go first?

From your own playtesting, how many rounds until the cafe and the players are low/out of cutlery, and are having to make some difficult decisions?

Otherwise, very fun ideas here, and I love the way it's formatted like a restaurant menu.

Hi, thanks for the question.

It's very dependant on how many Players you have and how long you want to play to be honest. For a sort of average group of 4-5 players and around 40-60 minutes 5 rounds seems to be the amount we've found in playtests!

I'm curious if this would be playable if one of the players is on Zoom? One of our DnD group had to move away, and we manage with her on zoom, plus a tablet on a cell phone stand so she can see whatever battle map we use). Thanks!

Upon closer look, it looks like it should work fine, curious your opinion though!

Hi yes, absolutely It should work! You will likely have to draw cards for her and discard any cutlery from the communal pool for her but other than that there sholdn't be any issues!

Amazing! Is anyone interested in submitting a two page coffee themed rpg for this Coffee book? - ISBN COFFEE - celebrating coffee with a book & beans! by Beyond Cataclysm Books — Kickstarter
